OLED55G16LA webOS 6.5.3: native video playback fails over HTTPS but works over HTTP

Hello,

I am investigating a reproducible HTTPS media playback issue on an LG OLED55G16LA.

Environment:

  • TV: LG OLED55G16LA

  • Firmware: 03.53.45

  • webOS SDK/platform: 6.5.3

  • Browser: Web0S / Chrome 79.0.3945.79 / WebAppManager

  • Application: Jellyfin for webOS

The application itself can communicate with the server successfully over HTTPS. API requests, authentication and the UI all work correctly.

However, media playback through the HTML5 video/native media pipeline fails with:

MEDIA_NOT_SUPPORTED

Example:

https://jelly.myservice.com → MEDIA_NOT_SUPPORTED

But by not using encryption in a local network with that URL :

http://192.168.8.100:8096 → playback succeeds

The same media file is used in both cases.

  • So API HTTPS requests from the webOS application continue to work while native media playback fails.

This makes me think that the native media pipeline may use a TLS/certificate implementation or trust store different from the WebAppManager/Chromium networking layer.

The issue candidate came when i renewed my SSL certificate to a Letsencrypt one. It seems they upgraded the chain in May and on the certificate renewal the issue appeared.

It would means that a CA Store at the HLS player level has not been updated since some time and that cause playback issues on latest letsencrypt certificates.

I let you investigate more, i’m using local network ip at the moment but to share the service with some other LG users it would be awesome to include that in the next update.

Thanks,

Anthony
