My name is Ehsan Karami, and I am a long-time user and admirer of LG Smart TVs and the webOS platform. I am writing to formally request a key networking feature that would significantly enhance privacy, security, and performance for millions of LG webOS users worldwide.
Currently, webOS allows users to configure standard IPv4 and IPv6 DNS addresses manually, but it lacks native support for modern, encrypted DNS protocols—specifically DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT), as well as broader integration of DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions) at the OS level.
Here are a few reasons why adding advanced DNS settings to webOS is essential:
1. Enhanced Privacy & Security: Unencrypted standard DNS queries can be intercepted, monitored, or tampered with. Implementing DoH/DoT ensures that user DNS requests are encrypted, protecting consumer privacy from local network eavesdropping.
2. Improved Reliability and Bypassing Network Bottlenecks: Advanced DNS configurations allow users to seamlessly route through secure, high-speed DNS providers (such as Cloudflare, Quad9, or NextDNS) with cryptographic verification, reducing latency and avoiding ISP-level DNS routing issues.
3. Parental Controls and Content Filtering: Support for custom encrypted DNS endpoints enables family-friendly content filtering directly at the device level without requiring complex router configurations.
As Smart TVs become central hubs for home entertainment and digital life, adopting modern network security standards is crucial. Competitors and major mobile/desktop operating systems have already integrated these protocols, and bringing encrypted DNS options to webOS would solidify LG’s commitment to user privacy, security, and cutting-edge software design.
