Launching an installed app while watching cable TV

We are looking to invoke an app installed on an LG TV when a viewer zaps to and enters our channel while watching broadcast TV through the RF cable tuner.

Ideally, we would like the app to be launched either automatically or when the viewer presses a specific button on the remote control.

Our broadcast service is based on Korea’s domestic standard, 8VSB / ATSC 1.0, and we are considering a trigger-based approach using broadcast standards such as ACAP, HbbTV, OHTV, and AIT. However, we are unsure to what extent LG TVs support these standards, so we are reaching out for clarification.

Currently, broadcast-related APIs are not provided. LG apps and LG partner apps may have different specifications, but we do not disclose the details. If you have questions about LG partnership, please contact LG Seller Lounge > 1:1 Q&A > Partnership. Thank you.

You can’t make an app open automatically on LG TVs when someone switches to your channel using ATSC 1.0. The TV always needs the viewer to open apps manually. The closest thing you can do is show a message like “Press the red button,” which can open a simple web-based app if the TV supports it. But fully automatic app launch isn’t possible.
