As you already know, the new remote controller (MR26GA) doesn’t have number keys. Magic Remote | webOS TV Developer
So, when I want to use number keys, according to the TV’s guide, I need to press the ‘123…’ key then use a screen number keys. However, the number keys doesn’t appear always. It appears only when I use ‘Live TV’ from LG Channels.
Some apps allows to use number keys to move a specific channels. However, I cannot do that now because there is no way to use number keys.
So, I would like to ask:
- Is it possible to add number keys in my ‘More Actions’ menu by TV’s configuration?
- If the app needs to show the number keys in ‘More Actions’, is there any API or configuration needed inside the app?
In terms of consistent UX, the number key supporting is important. So, if possible, please let me know how to support number keys.
Some remote keys work only with webOS TV. The webOS TV app supports only the keycodes listed in the Magic Remote. Please use only those keycodes. If you need an on-screen keyboard, you can use the Virtual Keyboard. Thank you.
However, that ‘Virtual Keyboard’ needs a ‘input form’ to be activated.
Like the ‘webOS TV’ case, when a user want to change channel to ‘12’, the user will
- Press ‘123…’ button on the remote controller
- Press ‘1’, ‘2’ on the more actions UI
- The channel is changed to 12
There is any ‘input form’ and any input form is not proper that context.
In the same context of the other apps, if a use want to change the channel directly to 12, there is no way to do that. Same as the webOS TV, any input form is not proper for that context.
As you already know, previous LG TV remotes had number keys and apps - which has channel number system - supports number keys for changing channel. So, I wonder why that number keys related UX is prevented with the new remote controller.
As you may know, Samsung(Tizen) also doesn’t have number keys on the remote and there is a same key like webOS’s ‘123…’. In Tizen, when I press ‘123…’ button, I can use number key no matter what the app is launched. Sony and the other TV’s are the same.
Because of this difference, I wonder why only webOS prevents number keys on the other apps. From my view, there is no harm.
As you mentioned, the number keys are used to select TV channels, not for use in apps. And webOS TV supports both the Magic Remote and the conventional remote. Users can use the 123 button on the Magic Remote or the number keys on the conventional remote. However, regardless of which remote you use, you cannot use the number keys in the apps. Thank you.
